Herbal medicinal products play a crucial role in patient treatment throughout Europe, adhering to the same regulatory standards as chemical medicinal products. These products are commonly available over the counter in pharmacies, serving as easily accessible and integral components of self-care for mild infections and ailments. Despite their significance, herbal medicinal products face unique hurdles, including competition with botanical-containing food supplements and distinct bureaucratic challenges.
Recent policy developments, such as the ongoing revision of the General Pharmaceutical Legislation and the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) implementation report on the Health Claims Regulation, have brought these challenges to the forefront. Therefore, this summit serves as a platform for engaging discussions with key stakeholders. The goal is to collaboratively discuss the current challenges and opportunities for herbal medicinal products in the context of numerous European legislative initiatives, and to work towards enhancing the situation for these products.
